Engaging Communities

We believe in the power of the community to lead prevention efforts.

White Ribbon continues to build meaningful relationships with diverse communities, including immigrant and refugee communities, and individuals in Ontario to prevent domestic violence and femicide. On an annual basis, White Ribbon runs a Male Ally-ship program offering training, coaching and support delivering community activities.

The project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, Women's Issues.

Engaging Universities and Colleges

Nearly 3 out of 4 students witnessed or experienced unwanted sexualized behaviours in a Canadian postsecondary setting in 2019 (Statistics Canada, 2020). We urgently need to engage male-identified students to challenge the gendered social norms which perpetuate rape culture and sexualized violence.

For nearly a decade, White Ribbon has engaged with post-secondary institutions across Ontario to prevent sexual violence. White Ribbon continues to implement the Draw-the-Line Campaign, created by the Ontario Coalition for Rape Crisis Centres (OCRCC) and Action Ontarienne Contre la Violence Faite Aux Femmes (AOcVF). Based on the campaign, White Ribbon has created a unique training program inspiring students and staff to prevent sexual violence on, and off campus.

Draw-the-Line

The campaign engages Ontarians in a dialogue about sexual violence prevention. The campaign challenges common myths about sexual violence and equips bystanders with information on how to intervene safely and effectively. Draw the Line educates Ontarians on how to spot sexual violence and empower them to make a difference.

Engaging Youth, Educators and Parents

With high rates of gender-based violence, we all must do more to prevent it before it occurs. That means starting early and often.

White Ribbon develops and delivers age-appropriate gender-based violence (including sexual exploitation prevention) programming with youth, educators and parents to promote healthy masculinities, and gender equality. Through engaging virtual and in-person delivery we build the capacity of participants to adopt healthy boundaries online, to recognize the grooming process early, reducing frequency and likelihood of victimization.

A flagship resource, wrprevent.ca provides lesson plans for elementary and secondary school educators to engage youth in building healthy and equitable relationships, ultimately preventing sexual exploitation. White Ribbon continues to promote the resource, and providing training on its use. White Ribbon is also engaging with national partners to adapt the resource for national use.

Education-focused projects funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada, Public Safety Canada, Ministry of Education, Chamandy Foundation and Anonymous Foundation.

Preventing Online Sexual Exploitation Together

With COVID-19 pushing more children and youth online more often, we're seeing a rise in online sexual exploitation. In March 2020, White Ribbon began the Preventing Online Sexual Exploitation Together project. Together with provincial and national partners we will redress the stigma in survivors coming forward, promote the role of male ally-ship and create a compelling prevention-centred social marketing campaign.

Prevent

This digital learning resource offers all Secondary School Educators tools, resources and lesson plans to discuss child sexual exploitation and sex trafficking in their classrooms through preventative, safe and positive learning experiences.

Enhancing Intersectionality by Engaging Men and Boys

Education is crucial for driving change. By engaging with this movement, you can learn about gender inequality, its causes, and its effects on individuals and communities. This knowledge will enable you to challenge stereotypes, dismantle biases, and promote gender respect.

Engaging Organizations

It’s crucial that workplaces, and particularly male-dominated industries foster work environments where all staff can thrive. White Ribbon is proud to work with CSL Group, Sunwing, Vale, Rio Tinto, and Canadian Armed Forces, and others to build the capacity of organizations to embed male ally-ship and prevent gender-based violence.

With funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we are developing a unique volunteer and fundraising engagement strategy which will offer exciting opportunities for organizations and individuals to share their passion promoting healthy masculinities, and preventing gender-based violence.
